The annual statistical report of the Belgian Federal Agency for Occupational Risks (Fedris) shows that, for the third year in a row, the number of accidents at work has risen: from 157,242 to 168,462 accidents. The number of fatal accidents rose from 17 to 31 in one year. The main cause remains unsafe behaviour, especially in the industrial sector and construction. Safety is fundamental, in every sector and for every company. Or at least it should be, but unfortunately many companies still have poor safety policies.

WHY ARE SAFETY RULES NOT RESPECTED?

Employees or contractors who violate safety rules are more often involved in accidents at work. What are the main reasons people break the rules?

  • Lack of time.
  • Lack of effort.
  • Lack of comfort.
  • Group pressure.

HOW IS IT POSSIBLE THAT SO MANY PEOPLE VIOLATE THE RULES?

There are differences in the extent to which companies fail to enforce safety rules. Often they are only applied when inspection arrives. Or compliance with the safety rules is limited to making sure that people sign a document that wasn’t or barely read, and is certainly not respected.

WHAT’S THE ALTERNATIVE?

Companies must make safety an integral part of their culture and a condition of employment. How can they do this?

  • By creating detailed safety procedures.
  • By applying a zero tolerance policy.
  • By raising awareness.
  • By thorough training.
  • By constant follow-up and inspection.

USING ONLINE TRAINING IS THE BEST OPTION

  • It allows you to check people’s knowledge
By integrating test questions, your employee or contractor is obliged to go through the online module attentively and completely. If he or she does not pass the test, access to the site may be denied.
  • It ensures uniform content
Standardization of training material is crucial. By introducing online training you ensure uniform training, which contributes to the quality. The content is presented in the same way to every individual learner.
  • You can train multilingual employees/contractors
The European Agency for Safety and Health at Work requires that safety training should be available in the learner’s mother tongue. This is taken into account in the design of customised e-Learning. For some of our clients, we create online safety modules in more than 30 languages.
  • Shifts are not interrupted
Traditional methods hamper productivity because they have to be followed during working hours. This often results in long queues at the gate. Online safety training courses offer a greater degree of flexibility. They can be followed in advance and remotely.
  • You protect yourself against risks
It is an effective way for a company to demonstrate that it is in line with safety requirements. You can also demonstrate that the information was conveyed in a clear manner and understood by your employees and contractors.

WHAT SAFETY TRAINING COURSES ARE THERE? SAFETY TRAINING VIA E-LEARNING

SAFETY TRAINING VIA E-LEARNING

This type of training is designed to reduce organizational risks and comply with local or national policies and government guidelines. An efficient way of informing and testing own employees and third parties (such as contractors, suppliers and customers). Topics are created according to the needs of the company or organization, industry standards and the required legal frameworks. The advantage of e-Learning? You can add random test questions to the training.

TOOLBOX

What can you do with a toolbox created by Onyx? Inform third parties or your own employees about the job and the associated risks. It shows, in a clear way, which measures must be taken to reduce these risks to a minimum. If desired, a knowledge test can be linked to the toolbox. Via the Onyx One platform you can register participation and test results.

ONLINE TRAINING AS PART OF THE ONSITE REQUIREMENTS FOR CONTRACTORS

Long queues at the gate? Contractors who only know half of the safety regulations and don’t really apply them? With e-Learning you hold the solution. The contractor follows the digital training in advance and answers a number of test questions to check his understanding of the safety rules. Only after successful completion of the training the contractor will be granted access to the site.

ONLINE PLATFORM FOR MORE SAFETY

Does safety play a major role in your company’s contractor policy? Onyx One, the contractor management platform of the industry, helps you to maintain a safe work environment. The platform can be used in a ‘light version’ for training, testing and monitoring of third parties. The ‘full’ version streamlines the entire work process:

  • Company qualification.
  • Personal qualification.
  • Registration.
  • Training.
  • Reporting.
